Warhol Flowers XIII, Chromogenic Print, executed 1964, printed 2010 Of all the influences in Andy Warhol's work, Salvador Dali proved the greatest. The Spanish surrealist made an indelible mark on Warhol when he shared his secret formula for fame: 1. a well-crafted persona, 2. an entourage, and 3. a record for your every move. To Dali, uniqueness, popularity, and immortality together defined success. It was this formula that later made Warhol an exception to the rule. Warhol proved it isn’t who you know but who you are that matters. Before They Were Famous: Behind the Lens of William John Kennedy brings into focus the unique cast of players surrounding Andy Warhol during his rise to fame in mid-century New York, while hinting at the complexity of relations between the artists and the iconoclasts who made them. The collection boasts original never-before-seen photographs of Robert Indiana for his "Die and Eat" series and "Love" painting, and a stunning studio series of Ultra Violet in the nude, all eloquently retold for the exhibition's companion documentary. And that's just the beginning. Kennedy recalls his early days at The Factory, Warhol's midtown studio that served as the backdrop for projects with Taylor Mead, Lou Reed and others. It was by the building's south side fire escape where he captured Warhol as he held an unraveled acetate scroll of Marilyn Monroe against a brilliant specter of sunlight. The Miami-based KIWI Arts Group delivers a stunning vision of Kennedy's work, further articulating how Pop art would bring New Realism forward as a lasting mode of counterculture. The collection reinstates, however subtly, the movement’s original critique of American values by using commercialism, civil rights and sexuality to shape mainstream art discourse. The exhibition features recently unveiled images of Andy Warhol and Robert Indiana from the photographer’s personal archives, which laid in storage for nearly 50 years. Before They Were Famous will be on view April 19–May 29 at Site/109 on Norfolk Street in New York City--just blocks from where some of these historic images were taken --and, from April 27–May 31 as a collaboration between ModernMasters Fine Art and the Conrad Indianapolis in Indiana, Robert Indiana’s native state and a recurrent theme in his work. "William John Kennedy’s newly discovered photographs reveal a side of Warhol not often seen,” says Eric Shiner, director of the Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh. “He surrounds himself with his imagery, becoming an integral part of the environment and forever linking himself with the image at hand. The photographs are both engaging and rare, and they most definitely depict the artist at a pivotal moment, just before his career exploded." At Pop Art's pivotal moment in 1963, American photographer William John Kennedy instinctively identified Andy Warhol and Robert Indiana as the rising art stars, capturing them with what ultimately became two of the world's most iconic images—Andy's Marilyn and Indiana's LOVE. Kennedy’s relationship with them began when Indiana invited him to document the groundbreaking Americans 1963 exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, which included a blue-chip roster of artists such as Rosenquist, Oldenburg and Lichtenstein, as well as the young Indiana and Warhol. The Kennedy collection of silver gelatin and chromogenic photographs, solely published by KIWI Arts Group, reveals some of the only known images of the artists with their original works. After decades in storage, the pristine negatives are now being used to produce these historic images at Duggal— the same famous NY lab that processed the original negatives. This collection has traveled to select cities over the past 14 months; the New York City premiere marks the realization of a lifelong dream for the 81-year-old Kennedy and an important milestone for this exhibition. Full Circle: Before They Were Famous, the 2010 short documentary that chronicles the journey of Kennedy’s images as they were made public, will be screened in both New York and Indianapolis. Featuring a candid Robert Indiana in his Vinalhaven studio, along with Warhol superstars Ultra Violet and Taylor Mead, among others, the film provides rare and humorous insights into the worlds of Warhol and Indiana during the emergence of the Pop Art movement. Site/109 is located at 109 Norfolk Street between Rivington and Delancey Streets. Before They Were Famous will be open from April 19 - May 29, with a public reception slated for April 22 from 5-8PM. Exhibition hours are Wednesday-Sunday from 12-6PM daily; open by appointment on Mondays and Tuesdays. For more information, please visit www.site109.com. The Conrad Indianapolis is located at 50 West Washington Street. Presented by ModernMasters Fine Art and the Conrad Hotels, in association with publisher KIWI Arts Group, the exhibit features more than 50 rare photographs of Warhol and Indiana and will be on view from April 27 - May 31. Lesbian comedian Michele Balan performed at Wise Guys Comedy Club in Syracuse, New York on Thursday night, March 8, 2012 This was my first experience at Wise Guys Comedy Club. After the specialty drink "Temptation by Stein," shared over conversation with some new friends at the bar, we were treated to a buffet style dinner. Unlike the traditional buffet line at a wedding, this dinner boasted a fresh, 'good-looking' salad, carved turkey and roast beef, green beans with almonds, sweet carrots, bread, and two pasta choices that were both outstanding. With a ticket price of only $50 for dinner and an hour and a half comedy show, it is certainly something I would highly recommend to friends! By the time we left, my cheeks were hurting from laughing non-stop for over an hour and a half! Michele brings such a diverse comedy skit to the stage that anyone and everyone in the audience will be able to relate and share in the laughter. If you weren't able to catch this show, she will be performing on April 18th at Gotham Comedy Club in New York City. On January 21st gay men from across the country are invited to come audition in the New York area to become finalists in the Mr. Gay USA competition--with callbacks on January 22nd. The auditions will be used to select the top 20 finalists, all of whom will be invited to compete in the first round of the competition before 10 men will be eliminated. The remaining 10 men will be invited to move in to NYC-JC Guest Suites January 27 - February 4 for a weeklong competition that will ultimately lead to the selection of Mr. Gay USA 2012. This year, TV personality and founder of Mr. Gay USA, Jarl Haugedal, has teamed up with film producer and television personality, Michael Billy, to turn the week long competition into a reality series that will capture the daily contests and the process for selecting the man worthy enough to be called Mr. Gay USA 2012. “It’s an honor to be involved with this competition that represents a cause very dear to me,” commented Michael Billy, “I hope that my production and television background will help turn this competition in to something the world can watch unfold as we shine light on how the competition is not only fun, but encourages men to use their gay for good”. Each day, the finalists will be put to the test to show they have what it takes to represent the US, participating in a variety of challenges--from runway competitions, to cooking contests and political debates--as Haugedal, Billy and other special guests serve as judges. The judges will be looking for the man who shows an interest in the world and people around him; displays patience; has a compassionate and considerate nature; embraces change, things, and people different from his own frame of reference, experience, or cultural background; can articulate his thoughts and conduct an intelligent conversation; has a basic innate charm and sparkle; has poise; and is secure with himself. Ultimately, one man will be announced the winner of Mr. Gay USA and sent to South Africa from April 4-8, 2012 to represent the USA in Mr. Gay World. “I’m thrilled to have Michael Billy join the Mr. Gay USA team as we search for the best man to represent our country in this competition in support of human rights,” commented Jarl Haugedal, Mr. Gay USA Founder, “It’s exciting to take the US arm of the competition to the next level and offer another strong candidate at the Mr. Gay World competition”. Last year marked the first official Mr. Gay USA competition, with a social media competition, competitive swimmer and philanthropist Michael Holtz was named Mr. Gay USA 2011. He went on to the Philippines to compete in Mr. Gay World, where he was named First Runner-Up. All men interested in attending the Mr. Gay USA auditions on January 21st and 22nd, 2012 should go to www.MrGayWorldUSA.com and fill in the RSVP form. For additional information, contact Press@MrGayWorldUSA.com Photo credit: Joan Marcus Producers Joan Stein and Richard Frankel announced today that the Off Broadway premiere production of Standing On Ceremony: The Gay Marriage Plays will play its final performance at the Minetta Lane Theatre on Sunday, December 18. The show will have played 7 preview performances and 41 regular performances. The producers then plan to take the play, which opened to an overwhelmingly enthusiastic response from critics and audiences alike on November 13, 2011, to markets where marriage equality is not yet a reality, in an effort to help invigorate audience members in battleground states and raise money for marriage equality organizations. Responding to one of the defining issues of our day -- the on-going battle for marriage equality throughout the United States -- some of America’s most illustrious and Award-winning playwrights, including Obie Award winner Mo Gaffney, Heideman Award winner Jordan Harrison, Tony Award nominee Moisés Kaufman, Tony Award nominee Neil LaBute, Sundance Jury Prize winner Wendy MacLeod, Obie Award winner José Rivera, Obie and Outer Critics Circle Award winner Paul Rudnick, and Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner Doug Wright, have created a hilarious and poignant 90-minute evening of short plays that celebrates the courage to be in a relationship – any relationship. "We were delighted by the reception this play received in New York," producer Joan Stein said in a statement, "but it is now clear to us that its message is most vital and urgent in the forty-four states where same sex couples are still denied equal marriage rights. We are committed to finding this play a home in those places where it’s needed most." Conceived by Brian Shnipper and directed by Stuart Ross, Standing On Ceremony: The Gay Marriage Plays features a cast that includes Theatre World Award winner Craig Bierko (The Music Man), Daytime Emmy nominee Mark Consuelos ("All My Children"), Emmy Award nominee Polly Draper ("thirtysomething"), Tony Award winner Harriet Harris (Thoroughly Modern Millie), Tony Award winner Beth Leavel (The Drowsy Chaperone) and Emmy Award-winner Richard Thomas ("The Waltons"). For its Off Broadway premiere, Standing on Ceremony partnered with Freedom to Marry, the campaign to win marriage nationwide, and Broadway Cares / Equity Fights AIDS, and has donated a percentage of all ticket sales to these and other organizations promoting marriage equality. To launch its Off Broadway run, Standing on Ceremony joined with Tectonic Theater Project (Moisés Kaufman, Artistic Director; Greg Reiner, Executive Director) for Standing on Ceremony: The National Event, to help take the play’s message across the country (and the globe). For one night only on Monday, November 7, more than 50 participating theaters across America and beyond presented their own productions of the play to raise awareness and funds in support of marriage equality. Audience members across the country watched a live streaming introduction and post performance Q&A, and submitted questions via Twitter in real time. Tickets for the Off Broadway run of Standing on Ceremony, priced from $25.oo to $79.00 (plus a $1.00 theatre facility fee), are now on sale via Ticketmaster.com and at the Minetta Lane box office (18 Minetta Lane). The performance schedule is as follows: Tuesday - Friday at 8:00 p.m.; Saturday at 3:00 p.m. & 8:00 p.m.; Sunday at 3:00 p.m. & 7:00 p.m. Standing on Ceremony is produced Off Broadway by Joan Stein, Richard Frankel, Annette Niemtzow, Fakston Productions, Harley Medcalf, Jon Murray, Harvey Reese, in association with Diana Buckhantz and Niclas Nagler; Associate Producers, Luigi Caiola, Rebecca Falcon and Mary C.
